With our backpacks weighing us down and the sudden lack of mobility, we decided to take it easy in our last month of traveling and limit the amount of places we want to visit. But it is not only mobility that comes into question... For the first time in months, we had to start figuring out where to stay for the night and the carefree wandering about had to come to an end. On the other hand, staying longer at one place makes you experience it in a completely different way than just passing by and so we turned our minds around pretty quickly to start enjoying the positive sides of backpacking. Our first stop was Montevideo. Just across the bay from Buenos Aires, the Uruguayan capital is like it's smaller laid-back sibling. The architecture and culture are similar with a touch of extra friendliness and tranquility. We spent a weekend in the city and apart from an artesanal market in one of the parks everything was pretty much closed. It seemed as if every single citizen went down to the waterfront with their family and friends to enjoy the "mate ceremony" - sitting around and talking in good company while constantly sipping tea through the metal straw. Oh and since the Uruguay legalised marijuana in 2017 it's practically impossible to avoid the smell of it everywhere in the streets around you. It might even have an effect in the (too) loosen-up attitude of the people. Despite the relaxed environment, we quickly continued our way. With some guilty conscious, we decided to skip the rest of Uruguay in order to spend more time in Brasil. We couldn't wait to come back to the tropical weather, warm waters and magnificent Brasilian beaches. We visited the region around Rio de Janeiro in 2016, when we took advantage of an incredible offer (190€ return flight from Venice to Sao Paolo) to enjoy a 2 week vacation. We immediately fell in love and at the start of our current journey in November 2017, the north of Brasil already felt a bit relatable with reawakening of some old impressions. After spending almost a year out of the country we were now basically returning to it for the second time and we were pretty sure, we would love it again. The matter of coming from Montevideo to Florianopolis could have be solved by a single (crazy expensive) night bus which of course had been booked out due to our lack of planing in advance. So we decided to break down the trip into shorter bus rides. It was at 3AM in the morning in Porto Alegre when the headline picture was taken, showing Manca's desperation about not being able to move around as easy as we had been before. The next bus left for Florianopolis at 7AM and spending the night at Brasilian bus stations is not the most relaxed experience you could wish for. After another long drive with several detours we finally reached Palhoca - a smaller town near Florianopolis, where we met Bruno - our couchsurfer host, that would take an extremely good care of us during our stay. Based in Palhoca, we started to discover the surroundings. Every day, we would drive to a different beach, soak up the sun, try out some surfing, lay around in the water and enjoy the beach-life. Despite the amount of people (the beaches around Florianopolis are packed with tourists and locals in this season), we had a great time. We visited Guarda do Embau - a scenic little village built around at a river mouth which cuts a magnificent beach at the foothills of a steep hill overgrown with lush green tropical forest. The mixture of salty and fresh water with the river current that varies substantially depending on the tides make it a remarkable, ever-changing place. It was so nice we revisited a couple of days after! The island of Santa Catarina is known to have more than 40 beaches. Some of them like Praia Mole are filled with posh people showing off their six-packs and (artificial) curves. We tried to surf there, but the waves were too strong or too messed-up for our beginner skills. Just a short walk away lies a way smaller stretch of sand with fewer people and fine green grass reaching almost down to the sea. We walked there over the rocky coast, took some photos of surfers that handled the conditions pretty well and after reaching the beach enjoyed the little place until the afternoon thunderstorm. We can't get enough of the region around Florianopolis and so as many times before on our trip we decided to stay longer than we originally planed.

The next bus to Florianopolis left at 7 AM, making spending the night at a bus stop in Brazil anything but relaxing.

The most popular time to visit is during the summer months, from May to September when the weather is generally pleasant and the region is accessible.
